Participating in the FIWARE Summit 2019 was an unforgettable experience—a journey that managed to combine the modernity of open source technologies with the historical richness of a unique city like Genoa. Set against the evocative backdrop of Genoa’s Porto Antico, inside the ancient warehouses that once powered the port economy, the Summit provided the perfect stage to explore the new frontiers of digital transformation and to forge connections that went far beyond the mere exchange of ideas.

The Engineering Team at the FIWARE Summit in Genoa

From the very first moments, the energy in the air was palpable. The historical profile of Genoa—a city of navigators and great explorers—blended harmoniously with the drive for innovation that characterized every session. Through technical sessions, interactive workshops, and roundtable discussions, I had the opportunity to engage with international experts, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals, each contributing to a clearer picture of the potential of the FIWARE platform to create smarter cities and industries.

The choice of Genoa as the location added an extra layer of charm to the event. Walking through the streets of the historic center, breathing in the atmosphere of the port, and observing the architecture that tells centuries of history made every moment even more exciting. The event was not only an opportunity for professional development but also a chance to immerse oneself in the culture and traditions of a city that knows how to reinvent itself—looking confidently toward the future while keeping its roots alive.

Since the event was held in Italy, the role of Engineering — my company — took on even greater significance. The presence and commitment of Engineering provided a decisive boost to the event, highlighting the value of the technological solutions developed in-house.

I felt, in particular, a pressure that went beyond mere participation: it was as if I were personally responsible for organizing and ensuring the success of the entire event. This responsibility pushed me to give my best, knowing that representing Italian innovation meant proudly supporting an ecosystem of excellence and technological tradition.

One particularly significant aspect of the Summit was my presentation, entitled “Stress Testing of Powered by FIWARE Application: The Digital Enabler”. During this session, I detailed the stress testing process performed on a FIWARE-based application, highlighting the techniques and tools used to evaluate the robustness and scalability of the Digital Enabler. The objective was to ensure that, even under heavy loads and real-world conditions, the solution could maintain optimal performance, thereby guaranteeing the resilience and reliability of smart services. I demonstrated how a thorough performance analysis can reveal potential bottlenecks, allowing for targeted interventions to optimize the application’s efficiency. The feedback received was extremely positive, confirming the importance of a rigorous testing approach to support innovative projects that integrate open source technology with real-world applications.

The entire experience at the Summit represented a moment of personal and professional growth for me. Beyond the valuable technical sessions, the context of Genoa provided food for thought and a series of encounters that broadened my vision of the digital future. It was fascinating to see how the dialogue between past and present can give rise to revolutionary projects capable of meeting the challenges of an ever-changing world.
